Have you heard about “The Art of Noticing”? I didn’t know it’s a title book by author Rob Walker before until I saw someone tweeted about how important to paying attention on something around us, and there is a term called “The Art Of Noticing”. The main themes on that include:
- Mindfulness and Presence: Encouraging people to be fully present in their surroundings and to pay attention to the details that often go unnoticed.
- Creativity and Inspiration: Using observation and noticing as tools to spark creativity and find inspiration in everyday life.
- Joy and Appreciation: Finding joy and contentment in the small, often overlooked aspects of daily life.
- Curiosity and Exploration: Cultivating a sense of curiosity about the world and exploring it with a fresh perspective.
Among my friends, I’m well known as someone who doesn’t really care about anything other than myself. But in reality, I love observing what is happening or what is around me. That’s why I often spend time alone because I can simultaneously observe my surroundings.
Living in a rather cramped city makes me happy when I see other people enjoying their activities. For instance, when I go to Taman Kota GBK , I take great pleasure in the simple yet deeply meaningful activities unfolding around me.
I might see two women reading books while chatting, or parents laughing while they watch their kids playing around, couples sharing intimate moments, or men leisurely lying down, seemingly without a care in the world.
I really enjoy observing all of this, as it also gives me an understanding that in this world I live in, I’m not alone. There are many people who continue to persevere amidst the difficulties of urban life.
The art of noticing enhances our connection to the world and to each other, a connection I feel keenly while observing the diverse array of people at GBK park. When I take the time to notice, I become more empathetic and aware of the experiences of others.
Watching those people, reminds me of the shared emotions that bind humanity together. This practice not only nurtures my creativity and mindfulness but also fosters a deeper sense of community and belonging.
By cultivating the art of noticing during my solitary visits to the park, I navigate my life with greater awareness and appreciation for the beauty and resilience that surround me every day in the bustling city.
I think I’ve mentioned in my previous article how happy I am living in a bustling city where I can have my own time but not feel lonely because I love observing people around me.
For me, each person has a story, a unique journey that contributes to the vibrant mosaic of our community. They remind me that amidst the chaos and noise, there is a quiet beauty to be found in everyday interactions.
I’ve realized that empathy is not just an abstract concept but a tangible experience. I had a moment where I was just sitting by myself in a restaurant, and I saw a dad and his little girl celebrating her birthday. It was just the two of them, and they looked so happy. Their happiness affected me too.
The art of noticing has greatly influenced my personal growth. It has taught me to be present, to appreciate the little moments that often go unnoticed.
So, by noticing to the small, everyday details around us, we can see the beauty and significance in ordinary moments. It highlights how these observations help us realize that we are all connected and share common human experiences.
I love the concept of “The Art of Noticing” because thru this awareness, it encourages us to be more empathetic, understanding, and connected to the people around us.
